Tennis enthusiasts wanting to improve their backswing during the colder months will soon have four new indoor courts to choose from in Chatham-Kent.
Tennis Canada has selected Chatham-Kent to receive $200,000 in seed money for the construction of year-round covered tennis courts as part of its Year-Round Community Tennis Courts Program.
“This funding helps bring a tennis dome to our growing community and will provide another great venue for Chatham-Kent residents to have fun, learn new skills, and live more healthy and active lifestyles,” said Mayor Darrin Canniff in a news release.
Chatham-Kent Council approved the development of the indoor tennis dome in August 2023 as part of a new regional park on Bear Line Road near McNaughton Avenue West. The space has been leased to Tennis Clubs of Canada and another unnamed numbered company.
According to Tennis Canada, the construction of the courts is expected to start in the coming weeks, with completion scheduled in time for the 2024-25 fall and winter seasons.
Chatham-Kent is one of six municipalities receiving a combined total of $1.2 million through the Year-Round Community Tennis Courts Program to develop covered tennis courts in 2024. The program is funded jointly by Tennis Canada and Rogers.
