Chatham-Kent police are warning the public to be vigilant after a local woman was scammed out of $5,000.

Authorities say the woman received a call Friday from someone claiming to be from her bank.

He told her a story that there were charges on her account in the U. S. related to a family member, then asked for her banking information so he could investigate the matter.

The victim purchased $5,000 worth of gift cards and provided him with the information.  She eventually called her bank and got the bad news it was indeed a scam.

CK police remind everyone the purchase of gift cards is a common scam technique so please be careful anytime any caller asks for cards, cash, or bitcoin. Always check with your bank.
