CKHA Forced To Cut Back On Surgery Program

So much for your plans to undergo elective surgery at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance next week.

The board announced this afternoon they are cancelling all elective surgery.

The move comes at the request of the province as concerns increase hospitals and ICU’s will get over run with COVID-19 patients.

But as President and CEO Lori Marshall points out, they will still be handling some procedures.

We will continue with our day surgeries, ambulatory care, and some of our diagnostic procedures. Those will continue, along with, regardless of what may be happening with our occupancy rate, we will also certainly continue with emergency and urgent surgeries. So even though we may have to ramp down our in patient surgical program we will continue to provide emergency and urgent surgeries”.

The new policy goes into effect Monday morning.

There is already a backlog of 2,000 surgeries at local hospitals due to the pandemic.
