CKHA Forms Plan to Offset Carbon Tax

CKHA CEO Lori Marshall and Board Chair Greg Aarssen.

While the provincial government raises the alarm over ballooning heating costs for hospitals because of the federal carbon tax, local officials aren’t breaking a sweat.

A report from the Ministry of Environment, Conservation, and Parks says the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance is expected to have to shell out an additional $61,840 for heating costs in the coming year, thanks to the federal carbon tax. That number is expected to balloon to more than $154,000 by 2022-23.

However, CEO Lori Marshall says those costs won’t affect patient care. In a statement issued this week, Marshall says they’ve already taken action to offset those costs by introducing various energy efficiency initiatives.
