CKHA Looking For HELPers

The Chatham-Kent Health Alliance is looking for volunteers to assist with a new program aimed at keeping elderly patients engaged.

Lisa Northcott, Vice President and Chief Nursing Executive, says it’s called the Hospital Elder Life program or HELP.

“It’s a program designed to help elderly patients who are recovering in hospital have a successful recovery and be able to return home,”

Often when elderly people are admitted to hospital, they can become week or what we call deconditioned.”

Northcott says the elderly patients often become confused in unfamiliar surroundings, so  volunteers will work with them to make sure that doesn’t happen.

It could be anything from playing cards or going for a walk around the unit.
