With Chatham-Kent’s mandatory mask bylaw coming into effect on Friday, hospital officials are encouraging area residents to keep up with physical distancing and other measures.

CKHA CEO Lori Marshall says masks are just another piece of the puzzle when it comes to safety.

“We have been masking in the hospital since April and the reason for that is we recognize there are times when people just can’t do that social distancing,” Marshall says. “The width of corridors or just the direction that people may be walking, sometimes it’s impossible for that to happen.”

Marshall says that while she doesn’t want to overstep the advice of public health officials, masks are just one more precaution residents can use.

“It’s one more strategy, it’s one more thing that we have in our toolkit, and personally I have been wearing a mask when I’ve been out and about, grocery shopping or any of those kinds of things. We can’t let it be something we believe takes the place of social distancing.”

Marshall says maintaining a proper 10-person social bubble is also key to keep the community safe.
