An internal investigation has been launched following complaints about a civilian member of the Chatham-Kent Police Service complaining about last week’s Amber Alert.

Cell phones across Ontario rang out late Thursday night with word that a young girl in Brampton was missing – her body was found shortly after and her father charged in her death.

However, before the tragic news was reported, some people took to social media to complain about being woken up by the alarm – as it turns out, one of them was a local 911 dispatcher.

Chatham-Kent Police Staff Sergeant Mike Domony, who is responsible for professional standards, issued a statement this morning that the force strongly supports the Amber Alert system and its usage in this case.

“We are looking into that matter and will conduct an investigation relative to our Social Media procedure,” Domony says. “This is an internal, HR matter and we will not comment further on that topic.”

Domony goes on to say that members of the public are asked to be mindful that investigations and Amber Alerts are only used when they meet certain criteria and these cases involve a danger to a child.
