CKPS Warn of Scam Claiming to Raise Funds for Firefighters

Chatham-Kent Police are warning residents to be on guard for another scam making the rounds.

Authorities say they’ve been made aware of a phone scam targeting elderly residents asking for donations on behalf of local firefighters.

One resident reported receiving a suspicious call last Friday from man asking for financial support, but said the caller did not mention any specific fire department and failed to provide any verifiable information.

Police say the would-be victim did not give out any personal or financial information, but instead called police. Chatham-Kent Fire officials later confirmed that there was no such fundraising campaign going on.

Chatham-Kent Police are encouraging all residents, especially seniors, to remain vigilant and to never provide personal or financial information over the phone to unknown callers. If in doubt, hang up and contact the organization directly through an official number. Anyone who receives a similar call is urged to report it to the Chatham-Kent Police Service at 519-352-1234 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477.)
