The province is cracking down on cellphone use in the classroom.
A statement from Education Minister Lisa Thompson says starting next fall, cellphones will no longer be allowed in the classroom unless they are required for educational purposes, health and medical purposes, or to support special needs.
Thompson says during an education consultation last fall, 97% of respondents supported some kind of ban on cellphones.
The government says eliminating cellphone use will reduce distractions and allow students to focus on learning.
A formal announcement is expected some time in the future, although no specific timeline has been released at this point.
