The provincial government is partnering with an Ilderton farm to produce renewable natural gas from organic waste, which will help to heat homes across Ontario.

Operations began at the Stanton Farm’s newly expanded biogas facility on Friday, making it the province’s first agricultural-based renewable natural gas supplier.

The province said the project will provide over three million cubic metres of renewable natural gas to Ontario’s natural gas network annually. This will provide enough renewable energy to heat more than 1,300 homes in Ontario.

“Clean, renewable energy is at the heart of the solution to a low carbon future,” said Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks David Piccini in a news release. “Thanks to the actions and ingenuity of our people and our private sector, Ontario is driving Canada’s progress on greenhouse gas emission reductions in our fight against climate change.”

The facility will also eliminate over 11,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year, which is equivalent to taking over 2,200 passenger vehicles off the road.
