It was a Christmas to remember for many across Chatham-Kent as a wicked winter storm pounded the region late last week.
According to Chatham-Kent Police, more than 150 vehicles had to be pulled from the snow on municipal roads, with even more left abandoned on Highway 40, the 401, and 402.
Amid the chaos of the storm came heartwarming stories of generosity. Many residents took in strangers who were forced to abandon their vehicles, some stranded customers and employees spending the night at Walmart, and emergency shelters were set up at local arenas and schools.
Emergency workers, including police, fire, EMS, plow operators, and hydro crews worked around the clock for close to three days.
A state of emergency was in effect from the 24th to the 26th, and a municipal parking ban expired Tuesday afternoon.
Meantime, any drivers who left vehicles abandoned on roads within the Municipality of Chatham-Kent during the storm should contact Chatham Towing at 519-436-1000, Dave Cragg Towing at 519-351-1157 or Wrights Towing at 519-678-3327 to determine where the vehicles have been towed to.
A reminder that garbage and recycling collections are bumped back a day this week because of the holidays. The limit for Saturday pickups will be doubled to six bags or one toter and three bags to account for those whose collections were missed because of the storm.
