A new exhibit delving into the textile industry is opening at the Thames Art Gallery this weekend.
RAFT, featuring acclaimed artists Karen Kraven and Swapnaa Tamhane, will be on display starting Friday, January 16.
Karen Kraven, a Montreal-based artist, works in photography, sculpture, and installation. Drawing on her family’s history in garment manufacturing and fashion, she explores garment-making processes through deconstruction and reconstruction.
Swapnaa Tamhane, Toronto-born, based in Montreal, is an artist, curator, and writer whose work challenges colonial constructs through drawing, papermaking, and textile processes.
The centerpiece of the RAFT exhibit, a nearly twenty-foot-long sculpture inspired by a washing tank used by textile workers in India, acts as a frame for works in paper, textiles, pulp, and fabric reflecting their shared research.
An opening reception will be held at the Thames Art Gallery Friday evening from 6-8pm, including light refreshments and an artist-led tour.
The exhibit will be on display through April 4.
