College Support Staff Go On Strike

Support staff at 24 community colleges across Ontario have are on strike.

Picket lines began going up at campuses earlier this morning.

The 10,000 full-time college support staff, represented by the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU,) are seeking better wages, benefits, and job security, however a deal could not be reached before Thursday’s midnight deadline.

For its part, the College Employer Council says it has offered the union various monetary and benefit increases, including enhanced severance packages and better vacation carry-over rights.

OPSEU represents workers in over 150 job classifications, including disability services, library technologists, student success coordinators, co-op placement coordinators, and more.

Officials at St Clair College and Lambton College say their campuses remain open and classes are continuing as scheduled.
