Plans for a community centre hub in Wallaceburg will remain in the discussion stage for a bit longer.

Chatham-Kent council referred a decision about a possible community hub back to administration at its council meeting on Monday evening.

Council wants administration to hold public meetings to gather feedback on the idea that could possibly be a home to the Wallaceburg Adult Activity Centre and the Wallaceburg Community Band, as well as other groups and municipal services.

Councillor Aaron Hall said multiple community groups and organizations in Wallaceburg have expressed an interest and need for a new space and location.

Hall had asked Chatham-Kent administration to investigate and provide options to council about building a new Community Hub in Wallaceburg, or retrofitting an existing building within the community.

“I’m disappointed, I had hoped it would get voted on tonight,” Hall says. “But hey, we’re going to keep working away, we’re going to keep engaging with the community, keep working with our community groups, and keep trying to address some of their concerns.”

Thomas Kelly, Chatham-Kent’s general manager of infrastructure and engineering, has concerns about timing and resources to compile a report. He said a program manager would possibly have to be hired as well as an architect to highlight the options

Kelly estimates the extra staff would cost about $50,000.

Ridgetown recently looked into building a community hub by retrofitting a school, that project came with an estimated price tag of $11-million.
