Alarm bells are being rung on both sides of the border regarding a recently approved diversion of water from Lake Michigan to a city outside the basin. 
Chatham-Kent Mayor Randy Hope is a board member of The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative and says the Great Lakes need to be protected.
“The Great Lakes basin holds 20% of the world’s fresh water,” Hope says. “Now we’ve got more and more draw going out, and what’s happening to replenishment, which means lower lake levels. It’s going to create a multitude of problems.”
Hope says the committee is looking for ways to reverse that decision and letters have been written to both the American president and Prime Minister Trudeau.
