Progress continues to be made to prevent further gas leaks in downtown Wheatley.

Municipal officials say crews finished installing a conductor pipe at the APEC 1 well, closet to the site of last summer’s explosion.

Along with the installation of the 13” pipe, work crews have also removed the former casing from the approximately 100-foot deep well in the municipal parking lot. Officials say the casing is estimated at between 75 and 100 years old, and was heavily corroded.

Monitoring continues at the site, and workers could begin plugging the well as early as the end of the week.

No further gas releases have been detected since July 6th.
