Conservation officials are keeping an eye on area waterways after some rain this week.

The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority says the area didn’t get quite as much rain as expected this week, lowering the risk of flooding, however smaller waterways could still overflow their banks.

The Thames River will remain high through the weekend and into next week, with conditions similar to the traditional spring melt.

The river-side sidewalks in downtown Chatham will see flooding over the next few days, but businesses along King Street shouldn’t be affected.

Officials say while of the river’s ice cover has already melted, there shouldn’t be any issues with ice jams, however residents still need to be very cautious around rivers, ditches, and streams with slippery banks and fast moving, cold water.
