After a busy Canada Day weekend, Chatham’s Fifth Street Bridge will be shut down today.
Originally scheduled to close at the end of June, the date was moved to accommodate the downtown’s weekend festivities.
Director of Engineering Adam Sullo says the closure will last about 6 months.
“With their schedule we’re anticipating it’s going to be very close, it’s going to be at some point in December, we don’t know exactly the date yet,” Sullo says. “We know what the plan is but it’s one of those things, once we demolish and we see how things are going.”
Sullo says significant work will be done to the intersection of King and Fifth as well.
“There’s a Bell line that’s part of the current structure, which we have to relocate and they have to do a lot of splicing with that as well.”
Sullo says improvements to lighting will also be made in the area.
