A minor construction accident is getting the blame for causing the shutdown of Highway 401 in Tilbury earlier this week.

The Ontario Provincial Police said construction equipment struck some overhead hydro wires above the highway on Monday at around 1:28 p.m., causing the wires to fall across the east and westbound lanes.

Police were forced to close the highway in both directions between Essex County Road 42 and Queens Line Road as Hydro One crews attended the scene to repair and replace the hydro lines.

Highway 401 was closed for several hours and reopened shortly after the hydro lines were repaired.
