The long-running saga of Rondeau Park cottage land leases may be taking a turn towards a possible conclusion.
The provincial park was established in 1894 and includes 279 private cottages, which are on land owned and leased by the province. The leases were set to expire in December, 2019, but were extended for three years to December 2022.
Under the terms of the leases, if the leases are not extended, the cottage owners would be required to remove their cottages from the park.’
In a report to Chatham-Kent council on tonight’s agenda, it will detail the municipality’s discussions with the Rondeau Cottager’s Association and the province to come up with a possible solution of addressing and providing a possible solution to the longstanding issue.
Chatham-Kent has been in talks with the province to potentially remove the cottage lots from the provincial park and add them to the municipality’s jurisdiction, with Chatham-Kent then selling the lots back to the cottagers. The municipality has received preliminary appraisal information from the province regarding the value of the cottage lots, appraising the lots at $29.2 million in value.
