The Chatham branch of the public library could be on the move, but when and how remain to be seen.
Chatham-Kent council agrees the Chatham library branch needs more room, as they approved working towards increasing the size of the branch at their meeting last night. How and where the library will expand will be a question for another day.
Moving the library to the privately-owned downtown Chatham mall remains a possibility.
Further information about the potential cost will be included in a future report to council for approval as part of the entire proposal to move some municipal services to the Downtown Chatham Centre.
The Chatham library is currently 25,000 square feet. Library administration said they need about another 10,000 square feet to offer more space for the community, such as group study space and space for groups and organizations to gather and host events.
“It’s not so much for books, it’s space that we need for the community,” said Tania Sharpe, Chatham-Kent Public Library CEO and chief librarian.
