Chatham-Kent council approved two properties to be re-zoned for additional housing at Monday night’s council meeting.
The land at 18288 Kent Bridge Road, in the community of Harwich, was acquired for a 14-day residential substance use disorder treatment program. To recognize the land’s prior use as a bed and breakfast, council voted 14-1 to amend the zoning by-law to keep the original zoning, while also allowing for the temporary care facility, an office, and a single detached living facility. Councillor Amy Finn was the only member in opposition to the re-zoning.
In Chatham, the builders at 515 Park Avenue East will be able to continue with a new apartment building on the property.
Council voted unanimously to amend the height allowance for a building on this lot to be a seven-storey apartment building. The motion also requests to rezone the portion of the subject property containing a Woodland to be open space.
The redevelopment of the Park Avenue East lot includes a building containing 11 commercial units and 140 residential units.
The woodland area will remain as an open space, with council voting to deny any new development that could encroach on this zone.
