The contract for the management of the John D. Bradley convention centre was debated at Monday night’s Chatham-Kent council meeting.

Instead of giving Compass Group Canada a five-year extension effective January 2024 to provide for the management of the municipal convention centre, Chatham-Kent council decided to bring in an alternative motion.

Councillor Anthony Ceccacci’s motion, which was passed unanimously by council, directed administration to instead look at a shorter-term contract, or examine having a clause that would permit for the potential for Chatham-Kent to opt out of particular provisions or to terminate the contract early at a specified time period.

Ceccacci said that there is potential growth in the area around the convention centre.

“I think sending this back to administration to look at the potential aspects of the contract– maybe a shorter-term or the potential to off-load the contract is very beneficial to council,” Ceccacci said.
