On the agenda at tonight’s Chatham-Kent council meeting will be the status of Wallaceburg’s bridges.
Council will discuss hiring a consultant to explore converting the Dundas Bridge as well as the Murray Street Bridge into fixed (non-movable) structures, which will not allow for large boats to pass underneath.
Council toyed with the idea to possibly make the Base Line Bridge a fixed bridge earlier this year, but after public outcry they decided to make future repairs so the bridge can open to allow big boats to pass by and come into Wallaceburg’s downtown river basin.
In a report to council, it’s estimated that there will be an annual savings of approximately $1,100,000 if all bridges in Wallaceburg are converted to non-movable.
Wallaceburg is the movable bridge capital of Canada, as there are 36 known movable bridges remaining in Canada, of which six are located in Wallaceburg.
