Members of Chatham-Kent council and the mayor are not allowed to accept any sort of compensation for sitting on regional, provincial, or federal focused committees, boards or groups.

However, that might change at tonight’s council meeting, as council will consider a motion from councillor Aaron Hall that recommends a remuneration change, so councillors and the mayor can accept payments, expenses and per diems for sitting on various committees, boards and groups.

If council decides to accept compensation, it would put them in line with other municipalities that allow their politicians to accept compensation, per diems and other expenses for their participation on various boards, committees and groups.

Examples of regional boards that the mayor and councillors sit on include local conservation authorities as well as police service boards.
