With Councillor Melissa Harrigan watching from the virtual sidelines, Chatham-Kent council approved her medical leave of absence as the West Kent representative battles breast cancer.
Council and administration wore pink shirts that said “her fight is our fight” in support of Harrigan.
Harrigan plans on being absent for the next few months, putting her council and committee duties on the back burner until she is healthy enough to come back.
Council members praised Harrigan and pledged their support as she undergoes cancer treatment in the upcoming months.
Harrigan told council that she is currently undergoing chemotherapy and is doing well and feels really positive about the future.
Going forward, Harrigan said she is looking for more opportunities to raise awareness and funds for local needs within the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance.
