Plans continue to come together to unveil a statue in honour of local baseball legend and Hall of Famer, Fergie Jenkins.

Council will look to approve spending up to $20,000 at tonight’s council meeting to ensure the June 10th event is a home run.

A committee is planning a free, family friendly event in downtown Chatham during the day of the unveiling. The statue’s unveiling ceremony will take place at the Chatham-Kent Civic Centre.

Two sponsors have already paid for the statue itself, which is a replica of the Jenkins statue the Chicago Cubs placed outside of Wrigley Field last year.

The $20,000, which will come out of a reserve fund earmarked for community events, will pay for costs associated with the delivery and promotion of the event.

Jenkins played 18 years in major league baseball, and is in the National Baseball Hall of Fame and the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.
