Council To Vote On Urban Housing Amendments

Council will vote on Monday on whether to draft a zoning by-law amendment to facilitate more housing in Chatham-Kent’s denser urban areas.

Currently, only three housing units are permitted on residential lots in certain areas around Chatham-Kent, which have access to services like sewer and water. In other lower-density urban residential areas, four housing units are allowed on a single lot without special approval.

Administration proposes to draft an amendment that would allow for more areas in Chatham-Kent to allow up to four housing units.

At the previous council meeting on January 13th, councillors approved applying for the Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF) which would require urban residential lots to allow up to four housing units.

The municipality also plans to apply for the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund, which would require the same amendment.  This fund would give a federal contribution of up to 40 percent on municipal water, wastewater, stormwater, and solid waste infrastructure projects with a cost of up to $100,000,000.

If council votes to proceed with drafting an amendment, residents will have the opportunity to voice their opinions at the next meeting on February 24.
