A proposal to bring one-way traffic and angled parking to downtown Chatham has been rejected by the majority of Chatham-Kent Council.

Councillor Conor Allin brought in a motion that asked staff to review the feasibility of the conversion as part of the municipality’s upcoming Transportation Master Plan.

Allin said he hears a lot of complaints about parking in downtown Chatham, and wondered if the switch would even be possible.

“Hopefully this is one way of possibly (increasing) parking and getting more people in our downtown core” Allin said.

Allin’s motion was defeated 6-12. His fellow councilors expressed concerns with costs, safety, and the burden it could place on downtown businesses.
