A Chatham-Kent councillor wants a second opinion about the removal of more than 40 trees in Chatham and Erieau, however, he does not appear to have the support of local residents or municipal staff.
Ward 6 Councillor Michael Bondy has put forward a motion to hire a local arborist to reexamine 30 trees on Victoria Avenue in Chatham and 17 trees in Erieau that are slated for removal or potential removal.
Bondy, who lives on Victoria Avenue, is also asking that the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, the Lower Thames Conservation Authority and the Sydenham Field Naturalists be consulted before any tree is removed at either location.
According to municipal staff, the trees on Victoria Avenue have been assessed several times by certified arborists over the past five years. Administration added that seeking another opinion would cost approximately $10,000 and would likely yield the same results, which recommend removal.
The Erieau Community Association has also contacted the municipality to state that they do not support Erieau Boulevard being included in Bondy’s motion. As well, staff has been in contact with 12 of the 16 property owners impacted by the tree removals and over 80 per cent agree with the recommendations of the report and understand removal is required
In addition, Bondy’s motion is also asking that all other trees in municipal parks, nature preserves and trails be assessed to “ensure we are protecting the environment and also ensuring the safety of our citizens.”
CK staff reported that assessing all trees in the municipality would take between five to 10 years at an estimated cost of $4 million.
Bondy’s motion will be addressed on Monday during a closed session of council, which is subject to solicitor-client privilege. His motion will be voted on by members of council during open session.
