One municipal councillor is hoping that raising safety concerns about a stretch of Highway 40 will urge provincial officials to find a solution.
Ward 4 representative Rhonda Jubenville brought forth a notice of motion at the February 23 council meeting, asking council to vote on sending a letter regarding the stretch of Highway 40 between Chatham and Wallaceburg to the Ministry of Transportation (MTO). Jubenville also wants to send a copy to Lambton–Kent–Middlesex MPP Steve Pinsonneault and his Chatham–Kent–Leamington counterpart Trevor Jones, who serves as Ontario’s Minister of Agriculture.
“I’m seeing all of the accidents that are happening on 40 highway from Chatham to Wallaceburg and they seem to be targeted at Country View Line and Electric Line,” Jubenville told CKXS News.
Six collisions have taken place on the highway since October 2025. One in February resulted in three people suffering life-threatening injuries. With any safety improvements needing to come from the province, Jubenville hopes this letter will bring some much-needed attention.
“I just want them to take a look at it and see if there is anything that they can do to help mitigate all of these accidents that are occurring,” said Jubenville.
The Ward 4 representative encourages residents to attend the council meeting on March 9 and bring forward a deputation, as well as reach out to their local MPPs.
“And the minister himself, doing all those things. Because sometimes the squeaky wheel gets the grease,” said Jubenville.
