COVID Concerns on Walpole Island

The Chief of Walpole Island First Nation is calling in the community’s adults to step up to protect its youngest residents

Chief Charles Sampson says a recent rise in COVID cases among the First Nation Territory’s children is cause for concern.

“Presently, seven of the eight active cases in our community are children, and variants of concern have been detected in our positive cases,” Sampson says.

Over 50% of the community’s adults have been vaccinated against COVID-19, but those under 12 remain unprotected.

“Until a vaccine is approved for children under 12, the adults of the community must make wise choices to protect the young from this virus,” Chief Sampson says. “It’s up to the adults to wear our masks, social distance, and continue to sanitize our hands. It is up to adults to avoid large gatherings, parties ,and crowded beaches. Our children are not making the decisions in the community, but they are affected.”

Sampson says plans for the summer solstice are still going ahead, but anyone who doesn’t feel well is asked to stay home for the greater good of the community.
