Walpole Island First Nation is dealing with a potential outbreak of COVID-19 in its police department.

Officials say as a precaution, the community will be serviced by the OPP for the next two weeks.

The affected officers will be self-isolating, and the police station will undergo a deep cleaning to ensure the safety of the police force and community at large.

Although there are no active cases of COVID-19 on the First Nation territory, officials say some officers live off-reserve.

The statement from the First Nation Council says that although officials understand how important social gatherings are at this time of year, residents are asked to consider other, safer ways to stay connected to help prevent the spread of the virus.
