Four area food banks are getting a helping hand, thanks to the Southwest Regional Credit Union
CEO of the Sarnia branch, Glen Wilson says they set aside money every year to donate to events, but weren’t getting in the request they normally do.
“We made a decision to try to support the food banks in the four communities where our branches are,” Wilson says .”Just before Thanksgiving and just ahead of Christmas, it might be a good time to give them a little extra boost and allow them to be ready for those potential volumes of people they might be serving in the next little while.”
In all, $22,500 is being divided between the Salvation Army in Wallaceburg, Sarnia’s Inn of the Good Shepherd, the St Andrews Church food bank in Corunna, and the Wyoming and Petrolia Food Bank.
“This was a one time thing,” Wilson says. “We have a regular series of donations and participations that we do with different community groups.”
Wilson says branches support organizations in their respective communities through Casual Friday initiatives, along with matching contributions from the Board of Directors.
The organization is also marking Credit Union Day on October 15th, donating 25 cents of every transaction made to local charities.
