A sink hole is forcing traffic to be re-routed through a small section of east Chatham.

Municipal have shut down Park Street South between King Street East and Wellington Street East to excavate the area.

Public Works Director Ryan Brown says this is not an emergency situation, they’ve known about the sink hole for a few weeks but needed a milder day to, quite literally, dig into the issue.

Brown says on the surface, the sink hole is roughly half the size of a standard car, however what lies beneath remains to be seen. He says sewers in that area are fairly deep, as far as 25 feet underground.

Crews are expected to remain on scene for most of the day with the potential for more work in a couple of weeks.
