This is Crime Prevention Week, and Chatham-Kent Police say there is a part for everyone in the community to play.

Chief Gary Conn says the pandemic has brought the issue of safety to the forefront.

“The one thing that it has taught us is not to take our health and wellbeing for granted, and crime prevention is the same,” Conn says. “We need to make community safety a top priority and a shared responsibility. We need to have a collaborative approach, work in partnership with our professional partners and that includes the community.”

Conn says crimes of opportunity can be prevented by residents taking simple steps like locking doors, removing valuables from sight, and keeping an eye out for any suspicious activity in your neighbourhood.

Chief Conn says Ontario communities are among the safest in the world, but community safety and well-being takes hard work and collaboration, and the CKPS to partner with the Government of Ontario, local government, and community leaders, young people, and businesses to prevent crime during Crime Prevention Week and throughout the year.
