Cross-Border Shopping Becomes Costly Amid Trade War

Canadians taking a day trip to the United States will likely face a hefty fee for their purchases upon reentering the country.

As part of the response to U.S.-imposed tariffs, the Canadian government has implemented a 25 per cent surcharge on the majority of goods entering the country that originate in the U.S. This includes groceries, clothing and numerous other items.

The surcharge came into effect on March 4.

While U.S. President Donald Trump has paused tariffs on some Canadian goods until April 2, the Canadian government has refused to remove retaliatory measures until the U.S. tariffs are dropped entirely.
