Crossing Guards Hanging Up Their Vests

This week marks the end of an era in Wallaceburg and Dresden.

Students at Holy Family School in Wallaceburg will be bidding farewell to their crossing guard when school lets out this Thursday.

Al Welsh, who has manned the post for the last 28 years, will not be returning in the fall.

After the municipality cancelled the adult crossing guard program last year, Welsh stayed on, thanks to sponsorship from A DeBot and Sons, to help kids get across Murray Street safely.

But with the addition of a lighted crosswalk at the intersection with Reaume, the four-way stop will be removed at the end of the summer and Welsh will be hanging up his safety vest.

A similar situation is playing out in Dresden, where Jim Cracknell is leaving his post on Highway 21 near Dresden Area Central School.

Cracknell was able to carry on his crossing guard duties this spring thanks to the support of a number of businesses and local families.
