Embracing Chatham-Kent’s sizeable crow population, a group of local citizens is organizing a community event to celebrate the black-feathered bird.

The event, entitled Crowfest, will take over downtown Chatham between October 1-15.

Daily activities will be held during the festival, which will finish strong with an event catering to the youth of Chatham-Kent on October 14. And on October 15, there will be various family activities throughout the day, culminating in a live concert featuring “crow” themed bands and hits such as the Counting Crows, Sheryl Crow, and the Black Crows.

“I think we could have folks from around southwestern Ontario that love that Halloween/crow theme visit Downtown Chatham,” said Andrew Thiel, one of the co-chairs of Crowfest, in a news release. “Just like many of us who enjoy Christmas lights visit Jackson Park in Windsor.”

According to organizers, downtown merchants, landlords and tenants will be incentivized to decorate buildings and storefronts by October 1.

“We are really excited at the possibilities this sort of festival brings to the table,” said festival co-chair and CK Mayor Darrin Canniff. “Any citizen, business or group in Chatham-Kent can participate.”
