Temperatures are expected to soar this week in Chatham-Kent, along with much of southern Ontario.
Environment Canada has issued a heat warning with dangerously hot and humid conditions expected to last through the week, and possibly into the weekend.
Daytime highs through the week are expected to be near 35 Celsius with humidex values into the 40s, and little relief overnight with lows in the low to mid 20s.
Officials warn extreme heat can affect everyone’s health, although the risk is greater for older adults, young children, pregnant people, those with physical or mental illnesses, and people with disabilities or mobility issues.
Residents are warned to watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions.
Those lacking shelter, water, or food are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of extreme heat. Anyone experiencing homelessness should call the Homeless Response Line at 519.354.6628 (24/7) for support.
Cooling stations are expected to open across Chatham-Kent this week for those in need of a break from the heat.
