The demolition of a former elementary school in Chatham has commenced to make way for more affordable housing.
The Municipality of Chatham-Kent said site preparation has been completed and primary demolition activities at the former St. Agnes Catholic School, located at 55 Croydon St., began this week.
“The Municipality of Chatham-Kent recognizes the sensitive history of the building for some residents and has been in contact with these community members to ensure that items of particular sentimental value are preserved,” municipal officials said in a news release.
Demolition is expected to be completed by the end of June.
The property was sold to the municipality in August 2024 and CK Council voted to approve the demolition in February. Funding for the demolition has already been approved as part of the 2025 Capital Budget Update.
Municipal officials said the removal of the structure will allow for the construction of much-needed affordable housing in Chatham-Kent. Development options for affordable housing are expected to be presented to council at a future meeting.
According to the municipality, Chatham-Kent’s Centralized Waiting List of residents in need of affordable housing has reached more than 1,300 households.
