Work is getting back on track to tear down a pair of buildings in downtown Tilbury.

Two properties at 47 and 49 Queen Street North were deemed unsafe in 2022 following reports of a partially collapsed roof and structural failures. However despite an Order to Remedy and Unsafe Building being issued, municipal officials say the property owner failed to carry out the required steps.

Demolition was eventually able to begin, but had to be put on hold after engineers determined structural issues in two neighbouring buildings, making it unsafe to carry out any further work.

Municipal officials say they have now received the proper engineering reports to address the issues, and are working with the owners of 45 and 55 Queen Street to ensure those buildings are stabilized before demolition work can resume.

Officials say they recognize the unsightly nature of the site and have stressed to the property owners and their insurance provider the importance of keeping the project moving quickly.
