A development boom is well underway in Chatham-Kent after several projects were given the green light by municipal council.

During a planning meeting on Monday, CK councillors approved a proposal to sever a property to create a new 5.4-acre site on Baseline Road in Wallaceburg. The land severance marks the first step toward the creation of a multi-phase development, which will consist of a five-storey apartment building with plans for at least two more buildings.

Chatham-Kent Mayor Darrin Canniff said more projects are also expected for Wallaceburg in the near future.

“Wallaceburg is prime for a lot of development and things are starting to move,” he said. “There’s been a lot of people kicking the tires in Wallaceburg. They see the opportunities there.”

Also during the meeting on Monday, council approved the development of a 28-home subdivision in Merlin and another 14-home subdivision in Wheatley.

Councillors also approved the sale of 5.5 acres at the Blenheim Business Park, where On Time Logistics will be constructing a 1,000 square foot building.

“All those things happened in last night’s planning meeting and [you can] expect more planning meetings like that,” Canniff said. “It’s pretty exciting.”

Canniff added that the municipality will also be announcing a major residential development on Friday for the community of Ridgetown. The mayor said the project is the largest residential investment in Ridgetown in the past 50 years.
