Chatham-Kent is providing a “heartfelt gesture” to Wheatley residents who will be displaced from their homes over the Christmas holidays.

The municipality and Entegrus will be donating more than 100 gift baskets to the residents who were forced from their homes following the August 26 gas explosion in downtown Wheatley.

“Nothing can replace being in your home during the holidays, but the gift is a heartfelt gesture while we continue to work toward resolving the issue,” said Chatham-Kent Mayor Darrin Canniff, in a news release.

The baskets were prepared by Heidi’s Eats and Sweets and will contain fruit, candy, chocolate and gift certificates from local businesses.

Displaced Wheatley residents are being contacted by resource centre volunteers to pick up their baskets at the Village Resource Centre.

Municipal officials said demolition of the buildings in the evacuation was completed last week and excavation has begun in an effort to determine how the hydrogen sulphide gas is reaching the surface.
