Doing Away With High School Academic Streams

Beginning in September of 2022 there is a major change in policy affecting grade 9 students in Ontario.

The Ford government is doing away with the practice of asking students to declare if they want to pursue academic or applied courses, going a long way to determine their academic futures as soon as they start secondary school.

Critics have long argued that Black and other racialized students were disproportionately funneled into applied streams, limiting their future prospects.

The Education Ministry began the process this fall with math, and next fall will add science, geography, English, and French.

Premier Doug Ford says his party is happy to put an end to a discriminatory practice.
