Municipal officials are trying to ease parking pressures in downtown Chatham with ongoing construction on King Street.
Mayor Darrin Canniff tabled a motion at Monday night’s council meeting, aimed at helping local businesses affected by the construction work at 100 and 130 King Street.
The motion proposed a portion of the westbound right turn lane at the intersection of King Street and Fifth be turned into two one-hour parking spaces, while the existing 15 minute space would be relocated to the west limit, closest to the intersection.
The remaining parking spaces along King Street between Fifth Street and William Street would be converted from two hour parking to one hour. And finally, a no right turn on red for drivers traveling westbound on King at the intersection of Fifth Street.
“In terms of this proposed change here, it will allow for a greater turnover of vehicles…that should free up parking in this area,” said Edward Soldo, CKs General Manager of Infrastructure and Engineering Services.
Council voted unanimously in favour of staff implementing the changes.
“These adjustments are intended to help offset the loss of parking caused by the ongoing improvements to downtown while also ensuring safe and effective traffic movement in a busy downtown area,” said Mayor Darrin Canniff. “Supporting our downtown businesses and keeping people moving safely remains a priority as our work to revitalize downtown Chatham continues.”
The changes are expected to remain in place for the duration of the construction activity in the area. Residents and visitors are encouraged to watch for new signage and pavement markings as the updates are implemented.
