West Region OPP are putting the wraps on Snowmobile Safety Week with a warning for operators across southwestern Ontario.
The safety campaign ran from February 10th to the 17th, targeting unsafe riding behaviours that lead to death, injury and property damage both on and off Ontario snowmobiling trails. Excessive speed, riding too fast for the conditions and alcohol impairment continue to be the leading contributing factors in fatal snowmobile collision in Ontario.
In all, 49 charges laid across the region, including two charges for impaired riding, two muffler related offences, and 38 documentation charges involving permits, licenses, registration, and insurance.
Authorities say that while the winter conditions may be almost perfect, the behaviours seen on trails across the region are not. Drivers are reminded to stick to available Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs trails and keep safety top of mind.
Through the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) Interactive Trail Guide, riders can obtain real-time trail status information to help them choose a safe, enjoyable trail for their next riding adventure.
