A traffic enforcement blitz on local roads leading up to Canada Day has led to more than 200 charges.
The Elgin Ontario Provincial Police detachment, which also patrols Chatham-Kent, laid 242 traffic-related charges during a traffic campaign that ran from June 27 until July 2.
Of the charges laid, 144 were for speeding and 24 were for improper seatbelt use.
“The Elgin OPP urges all drivers and boaters to be aware of the risks associated with their driving or boating behaviour,” said Inspector Tyler Holmes, the OPP detachment commander for Elgin County. “Together we can make a significant impact in reducing traffic-related incidents.”
Authorities said the week-long campaign highlighted the importance of lifesaving equipment such as seatbelts, helmets and lifejackets.
Drivers are reminded that speeding is the leading factor in traffic collisions in the region that result in death or injury.
