When a provincial by-election is called in Lambton-Kent-Middlesex, it’s likely the proposed Dresden waste recycling facility planned for north of town will be a big issue on the campaign trail.

York1 Environmental Waste Solutions Ltd., headquartered in Mississauga, filed a proposal to the Ontario Ministry of Environment, Conservation, and Parks to expand the Irish School Road property, and area residents are fairly set that the negatives will outweigh the positives.

Dr. Keith Benn, the pre-certified candidate for the New Blue Party, said he expects the Dresden landfill issue to be a major issue in the upcoming by-election. He said there are currently too many unknowns for the waste recycling facility.

He said the region is familiar with water well issues over the years due to wind turbine construction.

“I think that there are a lot of people here who are worried about their water wells as well, because you’re on the same aquifer here. You’re likely to have the same kind of problems,” Benn said, adding he fears that water wells could be interfered with as well from the proposed Dresden project.
