Charges have been laid after a driver failed to stop for a school bus in St. Clair Township.
Just before 3 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, officers with Lambton OPP were conducting traffic enforcement as part of the “Safety Stops Here” school bus safety campaign, when they saw a vehicle whip past a stopped bus.
The driver, a 75-year-old St. Clair Township resident, has been charged with failing to stop for school bus with its signal lights on, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.
The accused was issued Provincial Offence Notices in relation to the charge and released from the scene. The accused will have fifteen days to decide if they will pay the fine, contest the charges in provincial court or meet with the prosecutor to discuss early resolution.
Authorities are reminding all drivers that passing a stopped school bus with red lights flashing not only puts children’s lives at risk, but can result in a fine ranging from $400 to $2,000 and six demerit points for a first offence.
